Club President - Michael Collins

Mike Collins is the current President of the Osler Club, having previously served as a member of Council. His term as President began in July 2025.

Mike comes from a farming background in Roscommon in the west of Ireland. He was educated at Summerhill College Sligo and at the University of Galway where he graduated MB BCh in 1973.  Mike trained as a radiologist in Sheffield, Yorkshire where he practised as a consultant in diagnostic and interventional radiology from 1981 to 2012. He studied Medical Ethics and Law at Keele University and gained an MA in this subject in 2009.

Following retirement, Mike undertook the DHMSA course and examination after which he was awarded the Osler Medal by the Society of Apothecaries in 2014. He was President of the British Society for the History of Medicine (BSHM) 2019-2021 and he was the principal organiser of the BSHM Congress in Sheffield in 2021. Currently, he chairs the John Blair Trust, a body that promotes the study of the history of medicine among undergraduate students.

Mike has lectured on a range of topics in the history of medicine, including the life Sir William Wilde (father of Oscar), lead poisoning due to the water supply in the 19th C, work-related accidents in Leeds and Sheffield and the history of radiology. A book chapter titled Christopher Addison, Distinguished Anatomist and Politician is in preparation. He reviews papers for the Journal of Medical Biography and Topics in the History of Medicine (BSHM).
